The Bird Island Flying Man Festival is based upon the custom of the ancient island inhabitants who, 600 years ago, acheived unpowered gliding flight using Rogallo like hang gliders constructed of primitive materials. The Flying Man Festival celebrates this accomplishment by several days of gliding events culminating in a 24 hour celebration in which the gliders are symbolically burned as they were each year centuries ago.
